Make Custom Shop Counters for Dollhouse Shops - Fitting out a tiny shop can take a bit of planning. Your designs are easier to realize if you make custom miniature shop counters in your choice of depth, width and height. I've made mine with a simple faux marble top that lends itself to a pastry shop, and I've made it a lower height to accept a glass fronted top....

Paint Technique for Miniature Marble - To add to a pastry or tea shop I realized I wanted marble pastry boards and counters. In miniature, real marble is out of scale, so it works best when created with a faux marble paint technique scaled down for miniatures. I used acrylic paints and you can turn almost any miniature into something made of marble. Try painting wood or illustration board to make marble floor tiles or panels, or you can paint baseboards, columns, or the base of statues. An easy project to begin with is a simple wooden pastry board made from craft wood or card. Try your hand at cheese boards as well.Photo © 2012 Lesley Shepherd...

Choosing Hooks and Threads for Miniature Crochet - For miniature crochet choosing a thread and hook size can make or break a project. Even if you don't have access to the perfect thread, you'd be surprised what you can find in your local quilting or needlework shop or craft store. Using a 1mm needle and a range of threads, you can create anything from mini plush thread bears, to dolls house fashions or bedspreads, using full size patterns, or patterns specifically designed for miniatures. In these small scales, the stiffness of the thread is as important as the thickness.Choosing Hooks and Threads for Miniature Crochet originally appeared on ...

Tiny Teabags for Dolls House Scenes - With Mother's Day on the way, make miniature teabags to add to popular scenes for mom. These can be used with the pouring liquids instructions for 'frozen moments' if you prefer to see tea streaming into a cup. The tea bags actually have 'tea leaves' in them, you just can see them at the angle I photographed the cup scene. "Used" tea bags should be plumper than new ones, as tea swells in hot water. Have fun!More Miniatures to Make for Moth...

Learn to Weave a Miniature Pastry Basket - For those who enjoy weaving in miniature, I've added instructions for making a simple basket on a rectangular wooden base, How to Weave a Miniature Pastry Basket. This technique lets you make woven drawers and storage boxes, tea trays with a woven edge, napkin holders or other items. This is a first step in learning to weave miniature furniture that has a wooden frame, the basic 'Lloyd Loom' style wicker furniture in dollhouse scales. I'll be building on this technique in future weeks. For now, the wicker pastry basket can be used in your pastry and tea and coffee shop settings.Photo © 2012 Lesley Shepherd...

Tips on Choosing Patterned Fabric for Miniatures - Choosing fabric with a pattern for doll clothing and miniature drapes and upholstery can be tough, especially for tiny dolls or drapes where most of the fabric is gathered. Gathering and pleating may hide the pattern completely. I've taken one fabric and shown it with several common styles of gathers to demonstrate how your view of the pattern may change. Sew A Simple Empire Waist Dress for a Doll - If you have a lightweight cotton fabric that gathers well, you can make an empire waist dress for any size or shape of doll. This one is removeable as the dolls arms will swing forward. If your doll has fixed arms, you will need to adapt the pattern with ties or buttons on the shoulders. The doll in this photo is a lovely tiny ball joint doll in 1:12 scale, "Mina" by Carrie Attwood of The Sleeping Elf. The dress has been hand sewn, but in this size, that doesn't take much time! or fabric.Photo © 2012 Lesley Shepherd...

Simple Repairs for Porcelain and China Miniatures - Sometimes you need an easy repair to save items which aren't highly collectible. For china and porcelain miniatures, simple repairs can be made with Lepage China Weld which doesn't need mixing and can be removed with acetone. A few months ago I purchased a tiny porcelain doll for 25 cents at a toy show, intending to show the progress of costuming and wigging her. When I removed her existing 'native' costume, it turned out the too tight elastic her joints were strung with had caused her pelvis to break. China Weld to the rescue. Now she's ready to be recostumed and has a useful life again as a display piece. Other specialized glues you may find useful for your miniature workbox are on the ...

Laser Cut Doilies and Runners in Dollhouse Scales - The beautiful paper copies of crochet doilies made in miniature by Stewart Dollhouse Creations are a great use of a laser cutter for miniatures. How else would you be able to add vintage doilies to tiny 1:48 scale scenes? As these are made of paper, they lay flat so you can set tiny items securely on top of them. This is one of those miniatures that create a look almost impossible to miniaturize, even in larger dollhouse scales. They are a great way to fool the eye into believing real thread crochet can be worked with this much detail in small sizes....

Simple Project to Make - a Basic Miniature Step Stool - This miniature step stool is easily made, and can be used in all kinds of dollhouse and model scenes, to add a bit of height and shape a display. If you make it longer than shown, it can be used as a bench, or a support for a planter box. Set it outside a door with shoes under it and gardening tools on top, or modify the size and make several small display benches of varying heights to support items for a garden shop display. Fill the planter box with miniature tulip...
